Galway Chamber welcomes Bilingual Status for Galway.
Galway Chamber has a long association with Gaillimh le Gaelige since its inception in 1987 and support their work in the promotion and use of the Irish language in the city. This status will reinforce the economic benefits associated with the use of the Irish language in Galway city and it will also enhance Galway’s cultural image.
Gaillimh le Gaeilge
Bunaíodh Gaillimh le Gaeilge chun a chinntiú go leanfadh an buntáiste mór geilleagrach don chathair a ghabhann leis an nGaeilge. Ó bunaíodh í, tá ag éirí le Gaillimh le Gaeilge infheictheacht na Gaeilge a ardú, agus úsáid na Gaeilge ó lá go lá a chur chun cinn sa Chathair. Tá ag éirí le scéimeanna ar nós ‘Cairde Ghaillimh le Gaeilge’ ‘An tSeirbhís Gaeilge sa Ghnó’ agus ‘Gradam Sheosaimh Uí Ógartaigh’ dul i bhfeidhm ar phobal leathan ar bhealach cairdiúil oscailte.
Cuireann muid seirbhís aistriúcháin agus tacaíocht phraiticiúil ar fáil chun cabhrú leis an lucht gnó comharthaíocht, páipéar ceannteidil, biachláir, meáin shóisialta agus suímh ghréasáin a sholáthar go dhátheangach.
Is ar infheictheacht na teanga a dhíríonn muid ár n-aird go príomha toisc go mbíonn tionchar mór ag timpeallacht dhátheangach fheiceálach, agus toisc gur sprioc insroichte é lenár n-acmhainní teoranta. Buíochas don Roinn Turasóireachta, Cultúir, Ealaíon, Gaeltachta, Spóirt agus Meán–príomh-mhaoinitheoirí Ghaillimh le Gaeilge – as ucht an mhaoinithe a chuireann siad ar fáil dúinn gach bliain tríd an gCrannchur Náisiúnta. Tá ár mbuíochas tuillte chomh maith do Chomhairle Cathrach na Gaillimhe agus do scéim Chairde Ghaillimh le Gaeilge i gcomhar le Cumann Tráchtála na Gaillimhe a chuireann suim fhiúntach airgid ar fáil dúinn gach bliain.
Gaillimh le Gaeilge was founded to ensure that the great economic advantage for the city that comes with the Irish language would continue. Since its foundation, Galway le Gaeilge has succeeded in raising the visibility of the Irish language and promoting the use of Irish on a day-to-day basis in the city. Schemes such as ‘Cairde Ghaillimh le Gaeilge’ ‘The Irish in Business service’ Cairde Ghaillimh le Gaeilge and Gradam Sheosaimh Uí Ógartaigh are succeeding in influencing a wide public in a friendly and open way.
We offer a translation service and practical support to help businesses to provide bilingual signage, letterhead, menus, social media and websites.
We mainly focus on the visibility of the language because a visible bilingual environment has a big impact, and because it is an achievable goal with our limited resources. Thanks to the Department of Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport and Media– the main funders of Galway with Gaeilge ¬– for the funding they provide to us every year through the National Lottery. Míle buíochas also to Galway City Council and to our Cairde Ghaillimh le Gaeilge membership in conjunction with the Galway Chamber who provide us with valuable funding every year.

Stádas Dátheangach do Ghaillimh
Is ábhar bróid dúinn i nGaillimh le Gaeilge gur aontaigh Comhairleoirí Cathrach na Gaillimhe rún i bhfómhar na bliana 2015 le stádas dátheangach a bhronnadh ar an gcathair. Lá mór don Ghaeilge agus do Ghaillimh araon nuair a d’fhógair Uachtarán na hÉireann, Micheál D. Ó hUigínn, Cathair na Gaillimhe mar an chéad chathair in Éirinn le stádas dátheangach oifigiúil Dé Luain, 7 Márta 2016. Bhí an stádas seo ar cheann de na príomhspriocanna ag Gaillimh le Gaeilge agus muid i mbun ár gcuid oibre ag cur na Gaeilge chun cinn i gcathair na Gaillimhe.
Galway City Council’s approval of a bilingual status resolution in autumn 2015 is a source of pride for Gaillimh le Gaeilge. It was a proud day for both the Irish language and Galway when President Micheál D. Ó hUigínn, announced Galway City as the first city in Ireland with official bilingual status on Monday, 7 March 2016. It was one of the main goals of Gaillimh le Gaeilge to attain this status as we worked to promote the Irish language in the city.

Plean Teanga do Chathair na Gaillimhe
Tá obair ar bun chun an chéad Plean Teanga do Chathair na Gaillimhe riamh a chur i bhfeidhm i gcomhpháirtíocht le Comhairle Cathrach na Gaillimhe, Cumann Tráchtála na Gaillimhe agus páirtithe leasmhara eile. Mapa bóthair atá i bplean teanga na cathrach atá bunaithe ar chomhairliúchán leathan agus a thugann léiriú cruinn ar mhianta mhuintir na Gaillimhe. An toradh a bheidh air seo ar fad ná go gcuirfí seirbhísí poiblí, tráchtála agus siamsaíochta ar fáil a rachaidh chun tairbhe do phobal na cathrach agus pobal na Gaeltachta atá ar leac an dorais. Tá Plean Teanga Chathair na Gaillimhe maoinithe ag Foras na Gaeilge.
Work is underway to implement Galway City’s first ever Language Plan for the city in partnership with Galway City Council, Galway Chamber, and other key stakeholders. The city’s language plan is a roadmap that is based on extensive consultation and reflects the aspirations of Galway residents. The result of all of this will be the provision of public, commercial and entertainment services that will benefit the city community and the Gaeltacht. The Language Plan for Galway City is funded by Foras na Gaeilge.
Is é Gradam Sheosaimh Uí Ógartaigh an Gradam dátheangach dá leithéid is faide ar an bhfód in Éirinn. Chruthaigh sé deiseanna iontacha chun an Ghaeilge a chur faoi bhláth i gcathair na Gaillimhe le 21 bliain anuas, ag mealladh ainmniúchán ó eagraíochtaí ilnáisiúnta, spóirt, agus ealaíne, trádálaithe aonair, óstáin, ionaid siopadóireachta, bialanna, comhlachtaí ola agus níos mó, iad uile bródúil as an ról a imríonn siad chun stádas dátheangach na Gaillimhe a neartú. Is iad Gaillimh le Gaeilge a eagraíonn Gradam Sheosaimh Uí Ógartaigh, i gcomhpháirtíocht leis an Galway Advertiser agus TG4 agus le tacaíocht speisialta ó Chumann Tráchtála na Gaillimhe agus ainmnithe i gcuimhne ar Sheosamh Ó hÓgartaigh, nach maireann – duine de bhunaitheoirí Ghaillimh le Gaeilge agus a bhí ina rúnaí cuideachta tráth ar Ghaillimh le Gaeilge.

Cuireann an Coiste Logainmneacha i gcomhar le Comhairle Cathrach na Gaillimhe logainmneacha feiliúnacha Gaeilge a chur ar fáil d’fhorbairtí nua tithíochta sa Chathair. (90% eastáit nua tithíochta ainmnithe i nGaeilge amháin)
Tá ionadaithe ar an gCoiste ó eagraíochtaí éagsúla sa chathair le cúlraí agus saineolas éagsúla, ionas go mbeidh ainmneacha á roghnú atá baint acu leis an gceantar ina bhfuil siad, chomh maith le timpeallacht fhisiciúil na cathrach. Déanann an Coiste ainmneacha i nGaeilge a mholadh, atá simplí go leor gur féidir le daoine nach bhfuil Gaeilge acu iad a fhuaimiú. I measc na n-eastát atá ainmnithe ag an gCoiste tá Cluainín Cluneen (little meadow), Sáilín Saw lean (little heel), An Logán An Lug On (little hollow) agus Luí na Gréine Lee na Grain Ya (setting of the sun). Ní hamháin go bhfuil na hainmneacha ag luí leis an gceantar ina bhfuil an t-eastát, ach tá siad ag cur le cothú timpeallachta dhátheangaí.
The Placenames Committee collaborates with Galway City Council to provide suitable placenames in Irish for new housing developments in the city. (90% of new housing estates named in Irish only)
The Coiste consists of representatives from various organisations, backgrounds, and expertise, so that names chosen for new developments in Galway city have a local relevance and fit into the landscape and city environment. The approach the Committee has adopted is that the names they suggest are in Irish only but simple enough that a non-Irish speaking person can easily pronounce them. New residential developments that have been named by the Committee include Cluainín Cluneen (little meadow), Sáilín Saw lean (little heel), An Logán An Lug On (little hollow) and Luí na Gréine Lee na Grain Ya (setting of the sun). Not only do the names effectively describe the location of the development, but they also contribute towards creating a bilingual environment.
